Being a student abroad is hard to adjust to new culture. In this post, I want to share my experience and few tips to make yourself comfortable!
There are some essential tips I would like to give you.
1. Make social media accounts!
I stay off social media because I know I cannot restrain myself from having a social media addiction. However, if you want to keep up with new information, it is better to make one. Most of the school associations upload new events on social media, and it is easier to use social media to keep track of it. Also, you can keep in contact with other international students more easily. Since I only used Korean messenger, I made new accounts for Instagram and Facebook.
2. Follow and join school apps and social accounts.
Not only social media, but school apps can be helpful in various ways. Make sure to download the school’s apps or follow the school’s official social media pages. At the University of Edinburgh, there is an app called ‘UoE Events’ which helps us to keep track of new events - especially related to new students. I went to ‘Taste of Scotland’ by using this app, an event for new visiting and exchange students where we can experience Scotland’s culture. You can easily check out necessary events like orientation, accommodation meeting, and card collections by following the school's official social media accounts or apps.
3. Search for school trips and events.
Most schools have an international student association and society. Join the society or events held by them! It is more convenient and affordable to book a day trip and it is another way to make new friends. I recently joined the Wine Society, and the German students I met in the club recommended some nice wine bars and cafés. For the International Student Society, I booked a day trip to Highland for the ‘Harry Potter tour’. This day became one of the best life experiences. Don’t hesitate to participate in a new world!
